Why is it hard to find credible financial advice?

You ask genuine questions

How does this compare with other plans?
Can I have some time to think about it?

Yet you could be told

They are all the same.

Are they really all the same?

Say you are looking for a life insurance plan to cover your living expenses in event of a critical illness (CI) diagnosis. Some plans will pay out for Covid-19 and future unknown disease claims, and some don't Some plans cover you for up to your lifetime, while others cover you up to pre-determined no. of years.

Some plans may provide very similar benefits, but their costs may differ significantly. The list of differences goes on. They are not all the same.

Why don't you sign up first (starts filling up the form). You can use the free-look period to consider.

Is the free-look period enough for you?

Perhaps you are the meticulous type who needs to carefully weigh your options before making a big decision. If you truly want to spend more time getting to know the financial planner and the methodology, you should be given the time and space to think about it and ask more questions.

The typical 7 to 14 days of free-look period alone may be sufficient for some, but it may not be sufficient for you to make the best informed decision.

It doesn't have to be so hard

Be discerning

Tip: Ask upfront about the financial planning process

Examples,

"What is your methodology?"

"Can I consider or seek a second opinion?"

Financial planners worth their salt would jump at the chance to share with you about their best practices.

As you listen closely, discern.

Are you being persuaded by a salesperson attempting to push a sale when you are not ready? Or are you convinced that this is a competent planner who values your needs above their remunerations?

Be prudent

Tip: Ask probing questions about the solutions presented

Examples,

"What are the fees and charges?"

"Why this and not other solutions?"

Fact: Not all products and well-intended advice are created equal. There is no such thing as the best, one-size-fits-all solution. Discern whether your questions are being skilfully dismissed or truthfully addressed.

Are you only being told about the benefits but not the potential drawbacks? Or are you given enough information about how the solution compares to those offered by other providers?

Let's talk. How can I help you journey beyond the fine print?
